Neighbour to Cupramontana, and just a 15 minute drive from Cantinone Holiday Apartments, Staffolo is a well-preserved historic hill-top town with a centre retaining it's medieval feeling. Staffolo hosts an annual International Folklore festival inviting dance groups from all over the world, and the Festival of Verdicchio in August. Like Cupramontana, Staffolo is a major Verdicchio wine producer and there are many wineries to visit both in Staffolo and in San Paolo Di Jesi, nearby.
A visit to Staffolo is to see a beautifully preserved walled town, to taste excellent wine and eat very well (some of our most favourite restaurants are in Staffolo) to have a wellness day, and to entertain the kids. Here they can play and let off steam.
Staffolo has enjoyed rich cultural patrimony and illustrious people were born and have lived here. Visitors can enjoy monuments, buildings and mediaeval constructions as well as intense cultural life, including the work of music academies and local artists. It is well worth visiting the Church of Saint Egidio and the Church of Saint Francis (XIII century). Among local figures we can mention notary Vagnone Manuzio (XIII century) ancestor to the well-known Manuzio family, editors in Venice and Rome between the XVI and XVII centuries; the painting artist Maestro from Staffolo (XIV century; organ players Fabio and Alessandro Costantini (XVII century); and humanist Lancellotti (XVIII).
Just like Cupramontana, Staffolo is one of the Castelli Di Jesi Verdicchio producing towns, and many excellent vineyards can be visited to taste the local nectar.
Every summer in August, Staffolo hosts the Feste Del Verdicchio, one of the main wine festivals in the region.
Staffolo is the ideal place to visit from the Cantinone Holiday Accommodation, to discover new tastes and an oasis of calm to relax away from mass tourism.
The Relais del Borgo is an old nobility palace dating from medieval period. It was built on the protection walls of the town of Staffolo around 1300. The old buildings were changed for various functions over centuries, but in a recent remodelling, in the 1930’s, can be seen a late liberty style. More recently the buildings have been remodelled to a luxury hotel and spa using a combination of eco sustainable and historical methods while staying in harmony with the natural surroundings and the town itself.
Some antique features were preserved and restored such as friezes and some of the original doors remain; the stairs and the entrance gate (once spoils of wars); the entrance door to the ground floor and the windows of the ground and first floors, were preserved and restored; the original granite floors were re-polished.
In Staffolo you can find a children's play area at the town's gardens. The gardens have always been know as the "platform" because of the large circular base which in the 80s was a kind of race-track for toy cars. Here you'll find the cafe-bar of the gardens, open in summer only.
If you are staying at the Cantinone Bed and Breakfast and Holiday Apartments in Cupramontana at the beginning of August each year you can enjoy the International Folklore Festival in Staffolo organised by the folklore group Colle del Verdicchio.
It is held every year on the first Sunday of August (plus the preceding Friday and Saturday evenings).
Dance Groups from all over the world come and the show is really spectacular.
My favourites, however, are the youngsters from Staffolo itself who are all decked out in their costumes and taking their responsibility very seriously.
There is also something to eat, of course. This was on the menu one festival recently:
